What I learnt:
In this lesson we learnt about the preliminary task that we will be doing until Feburary Half Term. The first task that we have, is to make a school magazine front cover with a photgraph of a student in uniform and information that school children would be interested in reading. Im interested and intrigued to be doing this task, because it will allow me to use my magazine editing/creating skills and it will prepare me well enough for when we start on the music magazine. The music magazine cover is the second task we will be doing after the school magazine, we will be designing the front cover, and a double page spread. This task sounds fun because I have the choice of what music genre i want to work with, how I can lay everything out to blend together and make it interesting enough for the music genre choice lovers to be intrigued on what the magazine would be about.
My name is Kaciee Boshoff, and this is my blog. I will be discussing different aspects of Media Studies in this blog and will be sharing my experiences on what I've learnt.

Reflection on Media so far
My Reflection:
During the course of the homework that was set, I waited a tad late to start it which made me feel stressed and panicked. I eventually got over myself and decided to start it and get it done with. I found it interesting and fun. It was exciting to be able to design the layout of my blog, and once that was done it was interesting and skillful having to give my views on the 6 blogs. With the first blog I did, I found it helpful knowing there was more than one place I could find the resources. Learning how to upload a blogger video was extremely helpful for me in the future. The second blog I did, learning what Media Representation meant. This blog was interesting for me because even though I stated the obvious of what it meant, I tried adding in my own input of how I saw the word meaning. My third blog, about the TV drama, was the most fun and easy. It was fun because I chose a show that I watch so I knew alot about it. The show is in it's 5th season, but I spoke of the 1st season to keep it more understanding for anyone who read my blog. My fourth blog was the most easy and breezy. Because I had done analysing in Photography in GCSE, it came naturally to me to know what to write about. The fifth blog was about the Media Guardian article. This one was interesting for me because its main topic was of something I use everyday, so it felt eeasier reading through the article and explaining myself when I needed to.
Over all I have enjoyed doing this Bridging Task, and hope that Media Studies is just as fun for the next two years. I didnt do Media in GCSE, but for sixth form, it was one of my first choices, and I am glad I am getting the chance to try it out.

The Guardian - Twitter Allows Advertisers to Target Users Directly in Bid to Increase Profits
While I was reading the Media Guardian, I came across the article about Twitter. I found this article most interesting because it is a recent article and about a social networking site that is used all around the world. I for one use Twitter everyday and do enjoy it, so when I saw the article I was intrigued to see what was happening. The article is about Twitter allowing advertisers to directly target Twitter users with their advertisments according to the information they give away in their tweets i.e. what interests them. The article goes on to explain how Twitter, who carries out about 400 milion tweets a day, will actively be keeping track of what each user is reading and tweeting to see if they can get any ideas of what the users may like and be interested in. It is also said that Twitter has compiled a list of about 350 topics in which they think account holders may be interested in, allowing advertisers to target them with their ads. For exaple, Football lovers, if they tweet about football in the majority of their tweets, advertisers like sportswear retailers would be able to send ads with promotions on.
As I read through the article, what interested me about it, was that I am one of the many Twitter users, and I go on Twitter to communicate with friends or 'retweet' tweets that I find interesting. When I read the whole article I realised what Twitter's plans are and thats what piqued my interest because its something I am against and if I could argue against it, I would.

Ricky is an 18 year old with a troubled past and emotional issues, resulting in promiscuity and a reputation as the school's "bad boy". In this episode you see more of Ricky from the past because of the flashback. In this episode Ricky is shown as a manipulative, flirtacious guy that basically gets what he wants. But obviously due to current situations between him and Amy, you soon see him start to change.
Amy is 17 years old, she's a sensitive, intelligent, kind and loving girl in high school who plays the French horn. In the episode it focuses on Amy in the present and past, going from the hospital where shes having the flashback, and back in the flashback. In the flashback that Amy has, we learn that she had a one night stand with Ricky, and how even though she knew what she was doing she wasnt exactly excited about it and as a consequence she ends up falling pregnant. In this episode as well, it shows Amy in labour and shows how she's unable to handle pain.
Newspaper Reviews:
This show recieved mixed reviwes at the time of its debt. Here are a few of the mixed reviews.
-The New York Post praised the series for having a set of characters that are "... real and come from families of all stripes – from intact to single-parent households to one boy in foster care..."
-Variety Magazine reports that "ABC Family's latest original drama wants to be a slow-motion version of "Juno" but settles for being an obvious, stereotype-laden teen soap [...] based on first impressions, "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" should probably stay a secret."
- ReporterMag's Andrew Rees says, "The show...might be the worst scripted drama on television. Suffering from gag-worthy dialog, horrific plot twists, terrible acting, and characters who not even the best of 3-D glasses could give depth to, it’s a wonder how this show stays on the air."
Media Representation
Summary
Representation refers to the construction in any medium (especially the mass media) of aspects of ‘reality’ such as people, places, objects, events, cultural identities and other abstract concepts. Such representations may be in speech or writing as well as still or moving pictures. The term refers to the processes involved as well as to its products.
My Definition
My understanding of 'Media Represntation' is that it is a way of representing the world through your own view and creating what will interest the audience. The media world is about taking realistic situations and changing them to your opinion in order to catch the audiences eye. For example having a slim model on a magazine cover, in media it is often known to airbrush the images to make the model seem close to perfect and almost flawless, which catches different audiences attention, i.e. women see her as an icon and aim to be as slim as her because she's percieved as 'the perfect size'. Men however look at the model and think she's attractive and have this idea that women should look like that. So Media Representation is representing media in a way that will capture an audience to believe what they think is reality.

Three Rersources I Found Interesting/Helpful and Why
The resoures I found very helpful on http://beaverwoodmediabridgingunit.blogspot.co.uk/ were :
* How to Create a Blog video - as I am new to Media Studies and Blogger this was very interesting to view as it showed how easy it is to create a blog and start blogging, which is a bit different to other forms of social networking I usually use. I have enjoyed playing around on http://www.blogger.com/home and seeing what I am able to do when I blog!!
* Annotating a Magazing Cover - I found this resource very useful in identifying different aspects of a magazine cover and what the layouts and texts mean. This resource explained the detail that is required which made it easier for me to annotate and present the layout properly. I also did Photography for 2 years in GCSE, and in that duration I had to design a magazine cover of my own and then annotate everything thing I did, which will benefit me in my fourth blog.
* Research into the Term Media Representation - Again, as I am new to Media Studies, this resource was invaluable in my understanding of media and target audiences and what the intended audience response would be.
